Does the New Leestown/New Circle Criss-Cross Interchange Work? Crash Data Says Yes

Answering a viewer’s question, WKYT explained the reasoning behind Lexington’s second double crossover diamond interchange, at Leestown Road (US 421) and New Circle Road (KY 4), which opened in early October. In this design, traffic briefly crosses to the left side of the road, so drivers turning left no longer have to cross in front of oncoming traffic. That reduces “crossing conflict points,” the spots where some of the most severe crashes happen.

KYTC data from Lexington’s first double crossover diamond, on Harrodsburg Road (US 68) at New Circle, compares seven-year periods before and after it opened. Overall crashes fell 20%, minor-injury crashes 42% and rear-end crashes 68%.
