Traffic Advisory Update: US 31W Bridge Repair Project Closures in Munfordville Moved to Spring
Closures intended for October-December now expected March-May
ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (October 30, 2026) – Due to timeline constraints with availability of materials and schedules extending into restricted holiday weekends, along with peak winter weather potential late December into January, repair work to the US 31W Bridge in Munfordville is being rescheduled for next spring.
As originally announced earlier this month, the project involves steel repairs underneath the bridge deck along with expansion joint seal replacements and minor concrete work on the upper side of the bridge deck. Steel repairs will restore the structure's weight rating to its full capacity, while joint seal replacements will better protect bridge components beneath the deck from moisture. The scheduled concrete work will provide a smoother transition between spans.
The bridge will be reduced to one lane with temporary traffic signals for the majority of the project. Completion of the job will also require up to four weekend full closures. Work requiring a single lane closure across the bridge is now estimated to begin in late March, with full weekend closures to take place beginning mid-April.
Multiagency collaboration with local officials, emergency management and state transportation officials was conducted during a meeting a few weeks ago to make preparations for these weekend closures. Detour and emergency services information will be included with a public announcement next spring ahead of construction. Project updates can be found on our Facebook and X accounts @KYTCdistrict4.
